When most people think of a dedicated burnout car they think of a beaten up old VN V6 Commodore. Well there wrong ! when it came time for Leroy Rees (Big Bad Leroy) to build his ultimate burnout car he went all out.
He started out with a very clean and origianl 1975 HJ Statesman that had been sitting in a blokes shed for about 5 years. Lee's plan was pretty simply "My specs for the car were for it to be big powerful and f*%^ing loud" even know that sounds pretty simple a hell of a lot of time and research was done before any spanners started turning. With the help of alot of friends, family and local business they had all comined their thoughts and constructed a plan.
At first glance you would be forgiven if you thought that this Statesman was in the pro outlaw drag class with it's massive rear tyres and the methonal sucking big block busting out of what is left of the bonnet. But you would be wrong this 1975 HJ is a dedicated burnout monster, competing on the Burnout scene for a little over 2 years now BIGV8 has definetly made its way to the top with taking out some of the tuffest compettions that Australia has to offer.
In those 2 years BIGV8 has made its way all over Australia from the top to bottom smashing tyres and disturbing the peice in every state that it arrives in. Not only is the Statesman a big favoroite with the crowds so is Leroy the owner with his down to earth, honest country style attitudes of the big larakin he is always more than happy to chat to everybody.
BIGV8 has a 509 Big Block Chev neatly tucked inbetween the chassis rail supporting a Weiand 871 running 17% overdrive and an Enderle Bird Injector Hat. Sending the power south from that estimates 900 hp and 1000 ft pound of torque (haha yeah right) is a race preped 2 speed power glide with a 3800rpm TCE stall converter. Assisting smashing countless sets of tyres is a diff that hercules would have troubles breaking consisting of a 9'' housing, 35 spling axles, Mark Williams gear set ?and a full spool. John Pillar from Power House Engine and James Cracka Rees (Leroys son) have both spent many hours nutting out the right combo for BIGV8the reliablity and sound of the angry engine that they have put together is a real credit to all involved.
So with some of the best gear that the drag racing world has to offer it was time for BIGV8 to try its hand at the 1/4 mile. Running the exactly the same tune and suspension setup bar some steam roller size tyres Leroy was able to punt the massive gold rocet down the strip to turn out a very healthy 9.?? @ 1?? MPH. After runnning down the strip a few times leroy said “I don’t want to go too fast, cos I don’t want to have one of those poofy looking shopping trolley handles strapped to the back with a nappy to slow me down”
Leroy is the first one to admit that he would not be able to compete and attend so many shows across the country if it was not for his friends and family. When you take a walk through the pit area of BIGV8 you will find either a flury of work being done to the car or what could easly be mistaken for a bbq out the back of your mates house no matter what is going on you are definetly guarenteed a laugh !!!!!
